Artist Statement
My work discusses the idea of emotional reincarnation. There are times in our lives when drastic events happen, and it causes us to change as people. These events can cause us to see the world differently. They are in our memories, our dreams and have an effect on our daily life. When my mother passed away it caused me to change my perception of myself and of the world.
Growing up by the beach has given me many childhood memories that allowed for a strong connection to develop with the ocean. I view the beach as my church. I use the death of sea creatures as a visual tool to represent the “death” of my old self. I look at the womb as a tool to represent the “rebirth” of myself. I look at images of various structures that represent honoring someone after they die, and combine these images to evoke a spiritual experience. I recognize and embrace the importance of change, and look to my art as a therapeutic tool for processing my emotions and growth as a person. Taking my time to intricately draw, sculpt, and print is a meditative experience that takes a long time, and allows me to spend that time with only myself. I use a soft, pale color palette that you would often find at the beaches in New England, they also can be found from within our own bodies. I use this as a way to solidify the connection between my body to the beach.
